Abia APC governorship aspirant, Chief Mascot Uzor Kalu, has cranked up pressure on the Abia State Government, accusing it of dragging its feet on the Supreme Court judgment granting autonomy to local government councils.
Aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive that all states must obey the apex court ruling on direct allocation of local government funds, Kalu said Abia must stop hiding behind explanations and legal interpretations and begin full implementation.
The president had warned that the Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy is binding on all tiers of government and essential for grassroots development and constitutional order.
Reacting to this, the former Abia Chief of Staff said the administration of Governor Alex Otti has not shown clear, practical compliance with the ruling, stressing that respect for the rule of law is measured by actions, not press statements.
Kalu argued that local government autonomy is a constitutional obligation, not a matter for selective implementation, warning that continued delays undermine public confidence in democracy and weaken governance at the grassroots.
He urged the Abia State Government to urgently realign with the Supreme Court judgment, saying full compliance would strengthen democracy and restore trust among local government stakeholders.
Kalu reminded all levels of government that obedience to court rulings is a fundamental pillar of constitutional democracy, calling on leaders to set the right example as Nigeria advances its federal and democratic system.
