Abia 2027 governorship aspirant, Sir Mascot Uzor-Kalu, has delivered a strong message to political leaders, declaring that sincere leadership must recognise opposition as a vital pillar of democracy, not a threat to power.

In a statement that embodies his governing philosophy, the former Abia State Chief of Staff said democracy flourishes only when leaders embrace dissent, debate, and accountability, stressing that opposition exists to strengthen governance, not sabotage it.

“Opposition is part of democracy, not hostility,” he declared.

Kalu maintained that societies progress when leaders welcome alternative views, noting that constructive opposition sharpens policies, improves accountability, and ensures that governance truly serves the people.

“A healthy democracy thrives on debate, accountability, and the constant exchange of ideas. It is through robust opposition that policies are refined, leaders are held accountable, and the people benefit from better governance.”

He warned that seeing opposition as an attack on authority weakens democratic institutions and fuels public distrust, insisting that intolerance for criticism often results in poor leadership outcomes.

“When opposition is treated as an enemy, governance suffers. Leaders must recognise that criticism and alternative perspectives are opportunities to improve policies and deliver tangible results. Democracy is not a contest of personalities but a platform to serve the people,” he said

The APC chieftain linked strong opposition to transparency and responsive leadership, arguing that citizens gain the most when political debates focus on ideas and solutions rather than personal rivalries and party labels.

“In Abia, we must cultivate a political culture where opposition parties and leaders engage on the merits of ideas, not conflict.

““The opposition ensures that the government remains dynamic, innovative, and attentive to the needs of the people,” Kalu noted

He also called on citizens to play their part by staying informed, questioning government actions, and holding leaders accountable through lawful and civic engagement.

“Democracy is not complete without an informed and engaged citizenry. The people’s voice, amplified through lawful dissent and advocacy, is what keeps leadership grounded and effective,” he said.

Reaffirming his vision, Kalu said his leadership would prioritise inclusivity, dialogue, and accountability, urging political stakeholders in Abia State to see opposition as a partner in building transparent, people-focused governance.

“True leadership recognises that the ultimate goal is the welfare of the people, and opposition is an indispensable part of achieving that goal,” he said.
