Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has officially defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC), sending warnings to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obi announced his move on Wednesday, December 31, in Enugu, declaring that the decision was taken to reposition the opposition and rescue Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general election.

Addressing supporters and top political figures, Obi said a new chapter was about to begin.

“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026 we will begin a rescue journey,” he declared.

He also vowed that the opposition would stand firm against electoral malpractice in the next polls.

“We will resist rigging of election by every lawful means in 2027, he added.

Calling for unity, Obi urged opposition leaders across the country to come together as one family under the leadership of former Senate President and ADC National Chairman, David Mark, to chart a new future for Nigeria.

The high-profile event drew major political heavyweights, including David Mark; former Sokoto State Governor, Senator Aminu Tambuwal; former governors from the South-East; and other influential figures.

Also in attendance were former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; Senators Ben Obi, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, and Gilbert Nnaji; Chief Onyema Ugochukwu; Enyinnya Abaribe; Senator Sam Egwu; as well as several other Senators and members of the House of Representatives.

Obi’s defection is being widely seen as a political earthquake, reshaping opposition alliances as the race to 2027 gathers momentum.
