The long-awaited details of the Rivers State peace deal brokered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have finally been dragged into the open by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The deal, which was meant to end the political standoff between Wike and his estranged political godson, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, had remained shrouded in secrecy for months, with political observers mounting public pressure for disclosure.
MUK TV reports that although the peace agreement briefly calmed tensions after the state of emergency imposed by President Tinubu was lifted, the truce has since collapsed.
Political hostilities between the Wike and Fubara camps have now been reignited, with Wike accusing the governor of betraying the agreement.
At a stakeholders’ meeting in Eleme Local Government Area on Wednesday, the FCT minister warned that he would expose the details of the pact, insisting that the political risks he took at the national level had yielded results, unlike developments in Rivers State.
Following through on his threat, Wike revealed four key terms he said were agreed upon with Governor Fubara in the presence of President Tinubu before the state of emergency was lifted.
According to Wike, the deal stipulated that:
1. The governor would not seek a second term in office.
2. The Secretary to the Rivers State Government would be removed.
3. Sergeant Awuse would be reinstated as Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Elders.
4. The governor’s Chief of Staff, Ehie Edison, would be sacked.
The revelations have renewed the political crisis in Rivers State, setting the stage for another round of power struggle within the state’s political demography.
