European leaders have issued a joint statement underscoring that decisions about Greenland’s future rest solely with Greenland and Denmark.

In a coordinated declaration released on Tuesday, European leaders affirmed that Greenland’s political status and future must be determined exclusively by its own people and the Kingdom of Denmark.

“Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning Denmark and Greenland,” the statement read, signaling strong support for Greenland’s right to self-determination and internal decision-making.

The message comes amid ongoing international interest in the Arctic region, where strategic, environmental, and economic considerations have raised Greenland’s geopolitical profile. By stressing that no external actors should interfere in decisions about Greenland, European leaders sought to reinforce principles of national sovereignty and respect for existing constitutional arrangements between Copenhagen and Nuuk.

Officials did not link the statement to any specific proposal or negotiation, but diplomats suggested it was intended as a clear signal to outside powers that questions over Greenland’s status are an internal matter.
