The Director-General of the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Phillip Shaibu, says the Institute has restarted its core training programmes after more than three decades of dormancy.

Shaibu described the revival as a vital move toward rebuilding Nigeria’s sports ecosystem and restoring the institution’s role in developing skilled sports professionals.

Speaking on Tuesday, he noted that the renewed focus on training coaches, administrators, and technical experts will enhance capacity-building and improve performance across various disciplines.

“The revival of our foundational programmes is long overdue,” Shaibu said, emphasizing that a functional sports education system is essential to achieving sustainable growth in Nigerian sports.
He added that the NIS is also strengthening partnerships with regulatory bodies and sports federations to ensure the quality and relevance of its updated curriculum.

With the relaunch, the Institute aims to reestablish itself as the nation’s primary hub for sports research, coaching, and professional development.
