Poverty levels in Nigeria are expected to worsen sharply, with up to 141 million people—about 62% of the population—projected to be living in poverty by 2026, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

In its Nigeria Economic Outlook 2026 report, PwC says weak income growth and high living costs are undermining recent economic reforms. Poor households are especially vulnerable, as food accounts for up to 70% of their spending, leaving them highly exposed to rising food prices.

The firm warns that without stronger job creation, productivity gains, and effective social protection, efforts to reduce poverty will remain difficult.
