Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has alleged that a Nigerian resident in Russia bankrolled the violent protest that rocked Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
The governor claimed the demonstration, initially staged against the rising wave of kidnapping in Ekpoma and neighbouring communities, was hijacked and turned into a “well-organised riot”.
The protest, which involved youths and students of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), descended into chaos, leaving a 32-year-old protester, Osagie Abraham, reportedly shot and injured by a military personnel.
In the aftermath, security agencies swung into action, leading to the arrest of protesters, with an Edo State High Court later ordering the remand of 52 suspects.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Ebojele, Okpebholo alleged that the protest was funded by a Nigerian living in Russia, alongside other sponsors based overseas.
He said some of the suspects were intercepted while allegedly heading out to vandalise property, while others were identified through viral videos showing scenes of arson and destruction.
According to the governor, the arrests were backed by “clear evidence”, including video footage, stressing that those in custody were rioters and not peaceful protesters.
Okpebholo also dismissed suggestions that the unrest was linked to students or the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), insisting the protest had no connection with organised student groups.
Assuring residents, the governor said the situation in Ekpoma is now under control, with peace and normalcy gradually returning.
He urged the public to ignore fake videos and unverified reports circulating on social media, calling on residents to remain calm and go about their lawful activities.
