There was drama at the dedication of the Nnewi Catholic Diocese Cathedral as a church member, James Louise Okoye, publicly renounced Christianity in protest over what he described as the church’s failure to recognise the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
In a viral video circulating on social media, Okoye was seen shouting within the cathedral premises, repeatedly calling out the name of the former Anambra South senator, who died in July 2024, and declaring that he was done with the Christian faith.
Eyewitnesses said the dramatic outburst came shortly after prayers were offered for departed faithfuls, a moment Okoye believed should have included special mention of Ubah, whom he said played a key role in supporting the construction of the cathedral.
“My last day as a Christian. My last day as a Christian is today,” he screamed, drawing stunned reactions from worshippers and clergy alike.
Clearly aggrieved, Okoye questioned why the late politician’s name was omitted during the Mass, insisting that Ubah deserved public acknowledgement for his contributions before his death.
“Did you hear them say, may the soul of Ifeanyi Ubah rest in peace?” he asked angrily.
