Confusion and tension enveloped the Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday as lawmakers failed to reconvene plenary, one week after dramatically kicking off impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

It would be recalled that the Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had during its first sitting of 2026 last Thursday opened impeachment moves over allegations of gross misconduct. The charges reportedly include the demolition of the state assembly complex and spending public funds without legislative approval. Lawmakers had adjourned proceedings to January 15, 2026.

However, as of noon on the scheduled day, the Assembly complex, currently operating from the conference hall of its legislative quarters along Aba Road, remained deserted, with no sign of plenary resumption.

No official explanation has been given for the sudden silence, and no new date has been announced for lawmakers to reconvene, further deepening uncertainty around the impeachment process.

Efforts to reach the House Chairman on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Eneme George, for clarification proved abortive, as calls and messages sent to his phone were unanswered at the time of filing this report.
