National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally christened January 23 as “World Betrayal Day”, following the resignation of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the party.

The declaration was made on Friday as Kwankwaso addressed loyal supporters at his Miller Road residence in Kano, days after reports emerged that the governor was on his way to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso explained that the idea gained traction from reactions on social media, where commentators described Yusuf’s exit from the NNPP as a betrayal of the movement that brought him to power.

He said, “None caught my attention more than one who posted, suggesting that we declare January 23 annually as World Betrayal Day.

“Therefore, as the leader and grand patron of this movement, I hereby declare that I fully support the declaration,” he said.

According to Kwankwaso, the date will now be observed with special activities to remind members of the circumstances surrounding the governor’s departure and the lessons drawn from it.

It would be recalled that Governor Yusuf announced his defection on January 23, citing worsening internal crises and leadership disagreements within the NNPP.

While Yusuf’s supporters have defended the move as a calculated step towards aligning Kano with the Federal Government, Kwankwaso’s camp has condemned it as a betrayal that has deepened political uncertainty in the state.

Meanwhile, supporters of the APC have welcomed the development, describing it as a significant boost to the party’s growing influence and dominance in Kano politics.
