There was tensed atmospher at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja on Monday as supporters and critics of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, gathered at the agency’s Jabi office.
The rival groups arrived early, turning the area into a protest ground.
While one camp chanted in solidarity with the former governor, another demanded that the anti-graft agency subject him to a full-scale investigation.
Witnesses described the atmosphere as charged but largely peaceful, with security personnel on ground to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
Mild drama, however, played out at the gate when security operatives reportedly barred some members of El-Rufai’s entourage from entering the commission’s premises.
El-Rufai was said to have honoured an invitation from the EFCC, days after his legal team confirmed he would present himself for questioning.
The development followed a failed attempt to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, last Thursday.
After his arrival, the former governor proceeded into the EFCC facility, while protesters remained stationed outside, continuing their demonstrations.
