Abia politics could witness another high-profile defection as Hon. Alex Ifeanyi Mascot Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member for Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
The shock exit came just days after a high-profile meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a development that suggests he could be heading to the president’s ruling party.
Ikwechegh’s resignation letter, submitted Saturday morning to his ward chairman in Eziama Ward 1, Aba North LGA, thanked APGA for the platform to serve and wished the party well.
Insiders told MUK TV that the lawmaker had been planning his resignation for weeks, while quietly consulting stakeholders of his next political party.
Before his resignation, APGA’s structure in Aba North and Aba South had already crumbled, following the mass resignation of all local government executives and ward officials loyal to him. Political watchers described it as a calculated withdrawal that left the party hollowed out in Abia’s commercial nerve centre.
Despite the political storm, Ikwechegh has remained active in the National Assembly. He serves as Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Poverty Elimination and sits on key committees including Anti-Corruption, Navy, NASENI and Agricultural Institutions.
Only recently, he forcefully backed electronic transmission of election results, insisting that manual collation weakens democracy.
“I am for electronic transmission, real-time collation. This is 2026. We are no longer in 1945. We should embrace growth and progress.”
Speculation over his next move is intense. Some analysts believe he may align with Alex Otti, whom he once described as “magical.”
Others insist the ruling All Progressives Congress is his likely destination, especially following his recent engagement with Tinubu.
On his political future, Ikwechegh had earlier declared, “If my people in Aba say they want me to continue providing quality representation and dividends of democracy, why not? I am very much willing to offer my services as the chief servant of the people of Aba.”
