Apple has launched the MacBook Neo, a new $599 laptop powered by the A18 Pro chip, marking its most affordable Mac notebook in more than 10 years and a direct play for budget-conscious buyers who might otherwise choose Chromebooks or low-cost Windows PCs.

The MacBook Neo pairs a 13‑inch Liquid Retina display with an iPhone‑class A18 Pro processor, 8GB of unified memory, and 256GB of SSD storage in the base model, promising up to 16 hours of battery life in a 2.7‑pound aluminum chassis. Apple is positioning the system as an entry point into the macOS ecosystem for students and first‑time laptop owners, undercutting the MacBook Air while still supporting Apple Intelligence and other AI‑driven features thanks to its 16‑core Neural Engine.

The new notebook keeps things simple on connectivity, offering two USB‑C ports, Wi‑Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, alongside a 1080p FaceTime HD camera, dual speakers with Spatial Audio support, and dual microphones with voice isolation. While the Neo’s multi‑core and graphics performance are expected to trail Apple’s M‑series MacBook Air models, its strong single‑core performance and aggressive pricing suggest it will be more than capable for everyday tasks like web browsing, office work, and streaming.

Education buyers get an additional discount, bringing the starting price down to around $499 in some markets, a move analysts say could help Apple claw back share in schools long dominated by low‑cost Chromebooks. The MacBook Neo is available to preorder now in several regions, with configurations offering up to 512GB of storage and a choice of multiple colors to match Apple’s broader design language.
