Former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has said he believes God permitted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove him from office at the right time.
The former police chief made the remark during a retirement thanksgiving service held in his honour at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters Chapel in Abuja.
Egbetokun revealed that when he assumed office in 2023, he committed his leadership to God with three specific prayers — asking for wisdom to lead the force, grace to finish well, and not to remain in office beyond the time God permits.
Reflecting on that moment, he said he never anticipated becoming the nation’s police boss and that his first action after entering the office alone was to pray.
According to him, those prayers eventually shaped how events unfolded during his tenure.
Looking back on his long career in the Nigeria Police Force, Egbetokun said faith had played a defining role in his journey since graduating from the Nigeria Police Academy.
He also shared a personal revelation, noting that before joining the police, he once dreamt he would rise only to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General rather than becoming the country’s top police officer.
The experience, he said, taught him that God sometimes conceals greater plans from people.
Throughout his career, Egbetokun said his passion for the police institution guided his conduct, stressing that he always tried to uphold professionalism, integrity, transparency and fairness because his actions would ultimately reflect on the image of the force.
