Jehovah’s Witnesses have introduced a clarification to their long-standing position on blood transfusion, granting members the freedom to decide whether their own blood can be used during medical procedures.

While the religious group maintains its prohibition on receiving another person’s blood, the new guidance allows individual discretion when it comes to the use of one’s own blood in life-saving treatments.

PunchOnline reports that in a video statement released on their official platform, Governing Body member Gerrit Lösch explained that the clarification is intended to empower Christians to make personal decisions regarding their medical care.

He noted that although abstaining from blood remains a core doctrine, the Bible does not specifically address the use of one’s own blood in modern medicine.

“Regarding the use of one’s own blood…a Christian must decide for himself how his own blood will be handled in the course of a surgical procedure, medical test, or current therapy,” he said.

Lösch referenced biblical teachings dating back to Noah and the Mosaic Law but stressed that Christians today are not bound by ancient instructions requiring blood to be poured out and covered with dust.

He further revealed that many members already accept medical procedures involving their own blood, such as blood tests, heart-lung machines, cell salvage systems, and kidney dialysis.

“Some Christians may decide that they would allow their blood to be stored and then be given back to them. Others may object. Each Christian must make his personal decision on all matters involving the use of his own blood with regard to medical or surgical care,” Lösch added.

The issue has gained renewed attention in Nigeria following the death of Mensah Omolola, a cancer patient popularly known as AuntieEsther, who passed away in December 2025. She had declined a recommended blood transfusion on religious grounds, opting instead for alternative treatments backed by public donations exceeding ₦30 million.

Her death led to debate over the delicate balance between religious beliefs and medical advice.

The latest clarification underscores the group’s attempt to align its doctrinal principles with evolving medical practices.

While the prohibition on transfusions remains rooted in biblical teachings, Jehovah’s Witnesses continue to adopt modern, bloodless medical techniques that allow members to receive quality healthcare without compromising their faith.

A 2019 doctrinal statement also addressed common misconceptions, noting that members do not reject medical care.

“God views blood as representing life. So we avoid taking blood not only in obedience to God but also out of respect for him as the Giver of life,” the statement said.

The teaching draws from several biblical passages, including Genesis 9:4, Leviticus 17:10, Deuteronomy 12:23, and Acts 15:28–29, all of which emphasize abstaining from blood.

Over the years, Jehovah’s Witnesses have continued to embrace advancements in medical science, particularly bloodless procedures, reinforcing their commitment to both faith and modern healthcare.
