The Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a Learner Identification Number (LIN) for school children beginning from the primary school level as part of efforts to effectively track their educational progress.
According to the Ministry of Education, the initiative aims to create a unified system that enables authorities to monitor each learner’s academic record throughout their schooling years. The unique identification number will follow a student from primary education through to tertiary institutions, providing accurate data to enhance educational planning and policy implementation.
Officials explained that the system would help tackle issues such as duplication of records, school dropouts, and inaccurate data collection, which have long affected the nation’s educational statistics. The government noted that the LIN project aligns with its broader reform agenda to improve access, accountability, and quality in Nigeria’s education sector.
The implementation process, the ministry added, would involve collaboration with state governments, school administrators, and relevant stakeholders to ensure a seamless rollout across the country.
