More than 150 suspected bandits are believed to have drowned after a boat carrying them capsized in the Sabon Gida area of Sokoto State, where they were travelling to.

The incident was revealed by a counter-insurgency and security expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, in a post on X.

According to the report, the incident occurred on Saturday evening when a vessel transporting a large number of armed men suddenly overturned while crossing a water body in the area.

The unexpected capsizing reportedly threw all those on board into the water.

“Preliminary information suggests that many of them could not swim, leading to heavy casualties,” he said.

Early reports further indicated that none of the occupants may have survived the accident, raising fears that the death toll could be extremely high.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies have yet to give an official confirmation regarding the incident.
