Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed strong legislative endorsement for the creation of Anioma State, declaring that the proposal remains a top priority of the National Assembly.
Akpabio made the announcement on Wednesday while addressing party members at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Asaba.
He disclosed that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully committed to the initiative, describing the agitation for Anioma State as a long-standing demand rooted in equity, balanced development, and administrative efficiency.
According to him, the creation of Anioma State would lead to the restructuring of Delta State into two viable entities, with clear administrative and economic advantages.
“Anioma state will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” he said.
“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities.
“With Asaba as Anioma state capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.”
Akpabio further explained that Warri is well-positioned to serve as the capital of the restructured Delta State, citing its existing infrastructure, including an airport, seaport, government institutions, oil company presence, and a stadium.
The Senate President also acknowledged the role of Ned Nwoko, who has been at the forefront of the Anioma State campaign, noting that the proposal continues to receive significant legislative attention in the 10th Senate.
The APC zonal congress was attended by governors from Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River states, alongside key political stakeholders from across the South-South region.
Akpabio used the occasion to call for unity among leaders and citizens of the region, urging them to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration as a pathway to sustainable development and national cohesion.
The agitation for Anioma State has gained momentum in recent months, with reports indicating strong support from lawmakers and constitutional amendment committees, further raising expectations that the long-awaited proposal may soon become a reality.
