The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a new deadline of May 10, 2026, for political parties to submit their registers of members, extending the original date of April 21, 2026.

INEC made the adjustment in a statement, citing the need to give political parties additional time to finalize their internal documentation and ensure compliance with electoral guidelines. The change is reflected in the revised timetable for the 2027 general elections.

According to the commission, the extension aims to promote inclusiveness and transparency in party administration, allowing parties to update membership details before conducting primaries for elective offices.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining fairness across political processes, while warning that the new deadline would be “final and binding” for all registered political parties.
The register of members is a critical requirement under the Electoral Act, as it forms the basis for authenticating party membership during primary elections and candidate nominations.
