Gabriele Gravina has officially stepped down as president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), bringing an end to a controversial and eventful tenure that shaped the nation’s football landscape in recent years.
The Italian Football Federation confirmed Gravina’s resignation on Thursday, marking the conclusion of his leadership that began in 2018. His departure follows months of mounting pressure and criticism over the performance of Italy’s national teams and governance issues within the federation.
Under Gravina’s stewardship, Italy celebrated a major triumph by winning the UEFA Euro 2020 title, but the euphoria was later dampened by the national team’s failure to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In recent months, internal tensions and disputes with Serie A clubs over reforms to football governance further intensified scrutiny of his leadership.
While Gravina cited “the need for a new chapter” in his parting remarks, his exit opens the door to major changes at the top of Italian football. The FIGC is expected to name an interim leader before organizing fresh elections to determine Gravina’s successor.
