A 37-year-old man, named Opeyemi Olaniyan has been arrested for allegedly stabbing one Ayomide Oyekunle to death during a fight at a beer palour in Agbado area of the Ifo local government, Ogun state.
The suspect stabbed the victim on the hand and stomach with a broken bottle while fighting with another person over N25,000 debt.
The victim was reportedly rushed to Strong Tower Hospital, Giwa Oke Aro, for medical attention and died while receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident to newsmen on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the incident was reported to the command by the debtor.
Babaseyi noted that the suspect has been arrested and the corpse of the deceased deposited at Life Channel Morgue, Olambe, for autopsy.
He said, “On Saturday at about 11:30pm, one Oriade Kehinde ‘M’ reported at Agbado Division that while he was at his beer parlour, one Opeyemi Olaniyan ‘M’, aged 37 years, came to demand the sum of twenty-five thousand naira owed to him since last year.
“When the suspect did not receive an immediate response, he became violent, broke a bottle, and threatened to stab anyone within the premises.
In the course of being prevented from gaining entrance into the bar, the suspect used the broken bottle to stab one Ayomide Oyekunle ‘M’, aged 27 years, on the hand and stomach.
The victim was immediately rushed to Strong Tower Hospital, Giwa Oke Aro, for medical attention but later died while receiving treatment. The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody for investigation,” Babaseyi added.
Meanwhile, the police spokesperson disclosed that case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCIID), Abeokuta, for further investigation and likely prosecution.
