Chelsea FC midfielder Enzo Fernandez will miss Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester City despite issuing an apology for his recent comments about Madrid, head coach Liam Rosenior has confirmed.

Fernandez was handed a two-match internal suspension by Chelsea after he expressed admiration for Madrid during an interview over the international break, fuelling speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

As reported by BBC Sport on Friday, although the Argentine has since apologised to both the manager and the club, Chelsea have decided to uphold the original punishment, ruling him out of the crucial encounter at Stamford Bridge.

“I had three or four conversations with Enzo. He’s apologised to me, he’s apologised to the club,” Rosenior said. “We made a sanction, we made a decision, and we will stick with it.”
