Civil society and rights groups have erupted in fury at the Accountant General of the Federation, state finance commissioners, and other officials for opting to hold a luxurious workshop in the United Kingdom amidst a dire economic downturn.

Dubbed “Public Financial Management and IPSAS,” the workshop, held at the opulent Copthorne Tara Hotel in Kensington, London, from March 4 to March 9, 2024, drew sharp criticism for its extravagant location and timing.

Despite Nigeria grappling with a foreign exchange crisis and soaring inflation, government officials convened in London to discuss financial management, sparking outrage among citizens already reeling from economic hardship.

While participants engaged in discussions on critical topics like accounting in hyperinflationary economies and budget implementation challenges, many questioned the necessity of such an extravagant excursion.

Human rights groups slammed the decision as “financial recklessness,” urging officials to prioritize the nation’s economic well-being over lavish overseas trips.

While defending the workshop, the Director of Press at the Office of the AGF cited the annual nature of the event and the presence of UK-based facilitators. However, critics argue that in an era of digital connectivity, such gatherings could be conducted virtually, saving precious foreign exchange reserves.

As the nation grapples with economic turmoil, the optics of splurging on overseas workshops have further fueled public frustration, raising questions about government accountability and fiscal responsibility.
