The Abia House of Assembly, in a landmark move, has achieved a legislative breakthrough by passing a bill to halt the payment of pensions to former governors and deputies in the state.
Titled “A Bill (H.A.B 11:) for a Law to Revoke The Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions Law No 4 of 2001 and for other Matters connected in addition to that,” the bill’s sponsorship by Mr. Uchanna Okoro, the Majority Leader and representative of Arochukwu State Constituency, underscores its significance.
Following meticulous consideration, the bill swiftly progressed through its readings, culminating in a resounding approval during the day’s plenary.
Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa heralded the bill’s passage as a pivotal moment, heralding a new era of fiscal responsibility and prioritized development.
Upon gubernatorial assent, the bill will be enshrined as the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governor’s (Repeal) Law 2024,” ushering in immediate implementation effective Tuesday, March 19, 2024.
