Nigerian Senator Rufai Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, stirred controversy recently by donating 2,000 clay pots and 10,500 yards of white cloth to Muslim graveyards in his constituency.
Despite facing public criticism for his unconventional gesture, Hanga defended his action, attributing it to his quest for divine mercy and eternal rewards.
“This is a constituency project of Sen. Rufa’i Sani Hanga, Senator representing Kano Central. Instead of building hospitals, he distributed 5,000 pots and white cloths for the burial of the people of his senatorial District,” a post shared by a popular Hausa platform @VoiceofHausa revealed.
Confirming the donation on his Facebook page, Hanga’s aide, Dawuud Auwal, commended the Senator’s initiative, citing it as evidence of his commitment to his region’s welfare.
Clarifying his stance, Hanga emphasized that the donation was not part of his official constituency project but rather a personal endeavor rooted in his family legacy and religious beliefs.
“We made the donation to Kano state committee for the graveyards headed by Dangoribar Kano and district head of Tarauni Local government. We had found out that clay pots were lacking in most of our graveyards and decided to donate,” he was quoted as saying by Daily Trust.
Despite facing health challenges and undergoing extensive treatment both locally and abroad, Hanga expressed pride in his ability to contribute positively to his constituents’ lives, boasting of securing various projects in the 2023 budget for his area and pledging to oversee their implementation.
