Angry Nigerians protesting against bad governance and excruciating economic hardships under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, have displayed an empty coffin adorned with the president’s picture, symbolizing their rejection of his administration.
In a viral photograph obtained by SaharaReporters, demonstrators carried the coffin on their heads, reminiscent of a similar protest against former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012.
For the third consecutive day, a massive gathering of Lagos State residents and the Take-It-Back Movement assembled in Ojota, Lagos State, continuing their peaceful protest.
With slogans and placards, the demonstrators have maintained a serene and orderly atmosphere, vocally expressing their demands for better governance and a brighter future for Nigeria.
Ironically, the “coffin carrying” incident reminiscent the 2012 occupy Nigeria protests against the proposed removal of fuel subsidy by former President Goodluck Jonathan, which was actively led by Tinubu and other leaders of current All Progressives Congress (APC).
Reflecting on the 2012 protests in his book ‘My Transition Hours’, Jonathan recounted how the images of his mock coffin traumatized his elderly mother, who had already endured the loss of eight children.
“The protests continued unabated. In all of these, one woman I pitied most was my aged mother who was with me in the State House. Every day, she watched on television protesters carrying a casket with my picture on it and having the inscription ‘Rest In Peace.’ I could imagine her trauma. This is a woman who had 10 live births with only my elder sister and I surviving,” the former President wrote.
