President Bola Tinubu has stated that the All Progressives Congress (APC) victory in the 2024 Edo State governorship election signifies widespread support for his administration’s policies.
In a congratulatory message to APC candidate Monday Okpebholo, Tinubu praised the efforts of the party’s leaders and governors in securing the win.
The President’s message was conveyed in a statement by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.
“President Tinubu commends APC national leaders, Edo State leaders, and party governors for working hard to achieve victory. “He says the victory testified to the people’s support for the ruling party, its progressive ideals, its economic reengineering programme, and its commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians,” Onanuga wrote.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the APC winner of Saturday’s election, with the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) coming second and the Labour Party in third place.
The PDP has since rejected the result, alleging a compromised collation process.
In his full statement, President Tinubu congratulated Senator Monday Okpebholo on his victory, urging him to see the win as a call to service.
He encouraged Okpebholo to reach out to his political opponents and work towards uniting Edo State for its development.
Tinubu also commended other candidates for their role in advancing democracy, noting that peaceful elections like Saturday’s demonstrate Nigeria’s growing political stability.
He urged those dissatisfied with the outcome to seek redress through legal means.
The President further praised the people of Edo for their orderly conduct during the election, remarking on the progress of Nigeria’s democracy after 25 years.
Tinubu also acknowledged the efforts of INEC and security agencies in ensuring a successful and largely hitch-free election.
“I commend the INEC and our security agencies for working round the clock to conduct a successful, peaceful, and largely hitch-free exercise. INEC has once again demonstrated that it is committed to organising a free and fair election in our country,” President Tinubu said.
