The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted widespread thunderstorms across the country from Monday to Wednesday, urging citizens to take precautions, particularly in flood-prone areas.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet predicted localised thunderstorms in parts of Kebbi and Zamfara states in the northern region during the morning hours. It further anticipated thunderstorms in Kaduna, Bauchi, Adamawa, and Taraba states later in the afternoon and evening.
For the North Central region, NiMet expects thunderstorms over Niger and Kwara states in the morning, expanding to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Plateau, Kogi, and Kwara states by afternoon.
In southern Nigeria, thunderstorms are projected to hit Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Ondo states in the morning, with wider areas such as Oyo, Ogun, Imo, and Enugu states experiencing storms later in the day.
The thunderstorm pattern continues into Tuesday and Wednesday, with NiMet forecasting similar weather conditions across the northern, central, and southern regions. States like Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, and Bauchi will face multiple rounds of storms, while areas in the South, including Lagos, Delta, and Rivers, should also expect heavy downpours.
NiMet has warned that these thunderstorms could lead to urban flooding in major cities, especially where heavy rains and strong winds occur. The agency advised residents to avoid flood-prone areas and remain informed through regular weather updates.
Airline operators have also been advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports for better planning and safety during this period.
