The Nigerian military high command has issued a stern warning to individuals calling for the overthrow of the President Bola Tinubu-led government, labeling such demands as treasonable.

The warning comes in response to a viral video in which some citizens expressed frustration with the economic hardship in the country, citing the removal of fuel subsidies and the floatation of the Naira.

In a statement, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, condemned the calls, saying those advocating for a military takeover are attempting to cause discord in the nation. He emphasized that the military remains fully committed to supporting Nigeria’s democracy and the Tinubu administration.

The military does not have reasons to take over the government because they have enjoyed enormous support from the President,” Gusau said, attributing the current relative peace in the country to Tinubu’s backing of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

Gusau further clarified that advocating for a coup is a treasonable offense under Nigeria’s Constitution, and those found guilty of such acts will face the full force of the law. He reiterated the military’s loyalty to the government, stating, “The AFN is steadfastly committed to the preservation and advancement of our democracy.

He concluded by assuring that the military, alongside other security agencies, has been tasked with taking necessary action against any group or individual pushing for unconstitutional changes. The military remains focused on protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and upholding democratic governance.
