Vice President Kashim Shettima’s planned trip to Samoa for the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit was cancelled after an object struck his plane during a layover at New York’s JFK Airport, damaging the cockpit windscreen.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, confirmed the incident on Thursday night, stating that “President Tinubu, acting promptly, has approved a ministerial delegation to represent Nigeria at the summit in the Samoa capital of Apia while the plane’s repair has commenced.”

Leading the Nigerian delegation now is Environment Minister Balarabe Abass Lawal, who will represent Nigeria at the ongoing summit in Apia, which started on October 21 and concludes on October 26.

“Vice President Shettima and foreign minister Yusuf Tuggar have left New York for Nigeria,” the statement added.
