A bill proposing the creation of Ijebu State out of Ogun State has successfully passed its first reading in the Senate during Tuesday’s plenary session.

The legislation, sponsored by Senator Gbenga Daniel of Ogun East Senatorial District, aims to establish Ijebu as an independent state to address governance, economic, and political representation concerns.

Senate Majority Leader Michael Bamidele (APC) formally introduced the bill, titled the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2024 (Creation of Ijebu State).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio facilitated the proposal’s advancement, marking the beginning of a detailed legislative journey.

The bill will now proceed to subsequent readings, debates, and evaluations before reaching the final approval stages.

This development aligns with ongoing nationwide discussions on state creation, fueled by calls for enhanced administrative autonomy in various regions.

Advocates argue that creating new states could boost governance efficiency, spur economic growth, and deepen political representation.

If passed, Ijebu State would emerge as a distinct administrative entity with independent governance structures separate from Ogun State.
