The Senate, on Thursday, progressed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s four controversial tax reform bills to the second reading stage, intensifying debates over the proposed legislation.
Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) presented a lead debate on the bills, which started robust discussions among lawmakers during plenary.
The move comes a day after top officials from Tinubu’s administration appeared before the Senate, providing detailed explanations on the contentious reforms.
However, opposition to the bills remains strong.
Northern governors, traditional rulers, and the Northern Elders Forum had earlier criticized the proposals, describing them as not being in the nation’s best interest.
The bills now face further scrutiny as stakeholders continue to voice concerns over their potential impact.
