Gunmen have reportedly assassinated Professor Emeka Chukwuma, a senior lecturer at Delta State University, Abraka, at his residence in Asaba, Delta State.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday night when the 56-year-old professor returned to his hometown, Umueji in Asaba, for his routine weekend visit.
Sources revealed that Chukwuma, who previously taught at the Anwai campus before its conversion to Dennis Osadebey University, was killed in his home at the St. Bridges area of Umueji.
Prof. Chukwuma regularly came home every weekend. Unfortunately, he returned yesterday, only to be assassinated in his residence. Asaba is no longer safe, and we are deeply troubled by this situation,” a source lamented.
The killing has further fueled concerns about rising insecurity in Asaba, as residents have reported an uptick in violent crimes, including kidnappings and killings. Many have called on security agencies to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and property in the area.
Confirming the incident, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, stated, *“The matter has been reported to the police, and we are investigating the incident to apprehend those responsible.”*
Residents of Asaba continue to express fear over the growing insecurity, urging authorities to take swift action to restore safety and prevent further tragedies.
