The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) has raised alarm over the intensifying violence and insecurity plaguing Kaduna and Plateau states. The Church has appealed to the Federal Government to swiftly address the escalating crises of banditry, kidnappings, and militia attacks.
Speaking during a press briefing in Jos, ECWA’s General Secretary, Reverend Ayuba Asheshe, voiced the Church’s deep dismay at the persistent attacks targeting its members and communities.
We are gravely concerned by the rising tide of violence and the devastating impact on our Church members and communities in these states,” Reverend Asheshe stated. “The scale of insecurity calls for decisive action from the authorities and collaboration from all relevant stakeholders.”
Reverend Asheshe disclosed that the Church has expended over ₦300 million in ransom payments to secure the release of kidnapped individuals, yet over 50 members are still being held captive. He noted the immense financial burden this situation has placed on affected families and the Church.
In the face of these challenges, families are losing not just their loved ones but also their means of livelihood. The trauma and economic strain are unspeakable,” he added.
Highlighting specific incidents, Reverend Asheshe described the dire conditions in Kaduna’s Kwassam District Church Council (DCC) of Kauru Local Government Area. He revealed that more than 20 lives had been lost, and over 100 individuals, including Church members, had been abducted in recent weeks.
Moreover, the attacks on farming communities have exacerbated the region’s food insecurity, Reverend Asheshe warned. “Targeting agricultural hubs is creating a ripple effect that threatens food production and supply for not only the affected areas but also neighboring regions,” he explained.
The Church has urged the Federal Government to restore security and protect citizens’ lives and livelihoods without delay.
