Authorities in Libya say they have arrested six Nigerians, along with a Libyan man and his mother, over alleged involvement in human smuggling operations in Sirte.
The Abu Najim Police Department carried out the operation after intercepting a vehicle driven by the Libyan suspect, identified only by his initials A.M.M. His mother was reportedly present in the vehicle at the time of the arrest.
Inside the car, officers discovered six undocumented Nigerian migrants who were allegedly being transported as part of a smuggling attempt, according to a statement issued by Migrant Rescue Watch (MRW).
All those arrested, including the driver and his mother, have been transferred to the appropriate legal authorities for further investigation and prosecution,” the group said.
Libya has long been a central transit point for migrants, especially from sub-Saharan Africa, who attempt the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea in hopes of reaching Europe.
