Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has stirred up a social media debate by insisting that church weddings have no scriptural basis, arguing that marriage in biblical times was strictly a family matter and not a priestly function.

Omokri made this known on Tuesday in a post on his Instagram page while responding to a follower who demanded scriptural backing for his stance on church weddings.

The conversation stemmed from Omokri’s earlier criticism of young men who kneel to propose to their partners but fail to show the same reverence to their mothers.

In reaction, an Instagram user with the handle @jimmy_x challenged him to provide biblical evidence to support his claim.

In his response, Omokri maintained that even the term “church” does not exist in the original Greek Scriptures but only appears in later translations.

He also stressed that every wedding recorded in the Bible happened at home, underscoring the idea that marriage was treated as a family ceremony.

“Priests have absolutely no business with marriages. Because they want your money, they manipulate you by saying that Yeshua (Jesus) attended the wedding at Cana. Yes, He did. But as a guest, not as an officiating minister,” Omokri said.

He further alleged that the practice of conducting weddings in churches originated in Europe, where church buildings were initially pagan temples before being absorbed into Christianity.
