As schools reopen across Nigeria, new Google Search trend data reveals that students are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to support their learning, with a sharp rise of over 200 percent in AI-related study queries compared to 2024.

Google has reported a major surge in Nigerian students’ interest in artificial intelligence as an educational tool, underscoring how technology is reshaping classroom and independent learning. The tech company’s latest data shows that searches combining “AI + studying” spiked by more than 200 percent compared to last year, indicating that many learners are moving beyond curiosity to actively integrate AI into their study routines.

According to the data, academic subjects are at the forefront of this AI interest. Searches for “AI + chemistry” rose by 50 percent, while queries linking AI with mathematics and languages each climbed by 30 percent. Grammar-related searches tied to AI followed closely with a 20 percent increase. Common student searches included “Which AI is the most effective for tackling mathematical challenges?” and “How can AI be used to address math problems?”

Olumide Balogun, Google’s Director for West Africa, highlighted the significance of this shift, noting that students are not just seeking shortcuts but are using AI to deepen their understanding of complex subjects. “Nigerian students are adopting AI as a tool to enhance comprehension, particularly in difficult areas like chemistry and mathematics,” he said.

Balogun further emphasized Google’s commitment to providing resources that empower learners to grow, succeed, and maximize their academic potential.
The trend extends beyond academics, reflecting broader curiosity about artificial intelligence itself. Searches for “how to use AI” and “what does AI stand for” each grew by 80 percent, while “who is considered the father of AI” rose by 70 percent.

With this growth in student-driven AI exploration, analysts suggest that Nigerian classrooms and study patterns may be on the cusp of a technological transformation, as learners increasingly rely on AI not only for answers but as partners in critical thinking and problem-solving.
