According to the Pentagon, since the deployment of roughly 3,000 National Guard Airmen and Soldiers to Washington, D.C. under Joint Task Force-D.C. in August, troops have picked up 979 bags of trash, spread 1,045 cubic yards of mulch, removed five truckloads of plant waste, cleared 5.2 miles of roadway, cut back vegetation along 1.5 miles, painted 270 feet of fencing, and packaged 6,030 pounds of food.
Since August, around 3,000 members of the National Guard, part of President Trump’s D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force have been engaged in both security and public maintenance work across the streets, parks, and transit areas of Washington, D.C. Pentagon reports tabulate extensive community service activities, including nearly a thousand bags of trash collected, over a thousand cubic yards of mulch distributed, multiple truckloads of plant waste removed, and improvements to public roadways and infrastructure.
Troops have also focused on beautification, from clearing 5.2 miles of roadway and pruning vegetation along 1.5 miles, to painting fencing and supporting local food distribution efforts by packing over 6,000 pounds of food.
The deployment, launched under an executive order in response to what the administration called a “crime emergency,” was initially limited to 30 days but has since been extended through at least December. Guardsmen from D.C. and several states remain visible in the District, balancing traditional security support with a high-profile push to restore the capital’s image and cleanliness. Top officials say the mission remains open-ended and subject to review based on “situational assessment” and the needs of law enforcement partners.
