Nigerian Islamic cleric, Shiekh Ahmed Gumi, has been caught in a fresh web of troubles after UK-based Catholic cleric Rev. Nick Donnelly urged the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for the controversial cleric, accusing him of backing extremist activities.

Donnelly’s call, made in a post on his X account, followed Gumi’s controversial claim that there is no Christian genocide in Nigeria.

Tensions rose further when a viral video showed Gumi saying, “Herdsmen are not like the Indigenous People of Biafra; they are kidnapping children to make money. Let’s be fair with them”.

Reacting, Donnelly insisted that Gumi must face international justice.

“Gumi supports ‘herdsmen’, aka Islamist terrorists, kidnapping children to make money.

“The ICC needs to issue an arrest warrant on charges of crimes against humanity.
“Gumi needs to stand trial in the Hague,” he wrote.

His demand comes amid widespread outrage over the recent life sentence handed to IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, which has renewed debates about Nigeria’s justice system.

Human rights lawyer Malcolm Omirhobo added to the growing criticism, arguing that Kanu’s conviction highlights a “two-tiered justice system” that punishes some citizens harshly while allowing others accused of serious offences to remain untouched.
