The UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has called for an immediate end to renewed fighting in Eastern Equatoria, warning that ongoing communal violence and reported airstrikes in Upper Nile violate the Revitalized Peace Agreement.
In a statement issued from Juba, UNMISS urged all armed actors to cease hostilities at once and to respect their commitments under the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan. The mission said that recent communal clashes in Eastern Equatoria, combined with reports of airstrikes in parts of Upper Nile, are putting civilians at grave risk and undermining fragile security gains.
UNMISS appealed to national and local authorities, as well as community leaders, to de-escalate tensions, prioritize dialogue and allow full humanitarian access to affected areas. The mission reiterated that parties to the peace deal are obligated to protect civilians and refrain from actions that could trigger a wider return to conflict, stressing that continued violations could jeopardize the broader peace process.
