The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced plans to create a new office dedicated to protecting Americans’ constitutional right to keep and bear arms, marking a significant policy move amid ongoing national debates over gun regulation and individual freedoms.

Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed that the new office will operate within the Civil Rights Division. Its primary mission is to ensure that federal, state, and local laws comply with the Second Amendment of the US Constitution. The office will also serve as a resource for citizens, advocacy groups, and law enforcement agencies seeking guidance on firearms-related legal issues.

The initiative comes as states across the country continue to adopt varying gun control measures, often prompting constitutional challenges and appeals to the Supreme Court. Supporters of the move applaud the Justice Department for strengthening oversight of constitutional protections, while critics argue that it could complicate efforts to reduce gun violence and enforce existing regulations.

Officials have not yet disclosed the office’s opening date or leadership but indicated that staff recruitment and policy directives will begin early next year. The DOJ emphasized that the office will collaborate with other federal agencies to balance the protection of gun rights with public safety concerns.
