Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, has formally announced the designation of Victor Attah Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as an international airport, marking a major milestone in Nigeria’s expanding aviation network.

The Minister confirmed that the airport, owned by the Akwa Ibom State Government, has now met all necessary standards for international operations following an inspection of its new terminal and associated facilities. Keyamo praised the ultra-modern smart terminal, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility, and upgraded airfield infrastructure, describing them as among the most advanced in the country and suitable for handling international traffic.

With the new status, Victor Attah International Airport is expected to attract more airlines, boost passenger traffic, and enhance connectivity between Akwa Ibom and regional as well as global destinations. The Federal Government’s recognition aligns with the state’s broader push to position Uyo as an aviation and tourism hub, supported by ongoing investments in night-flight capability, navigational aids, and complementary tourism projects.

Keyamo commended Governor Umo Eno and the Akwa Ibom State Government for sustained investment in aviation infrastructure and assured continued Federal Government support to fully operationalise the airport’s international potential. Industry observers say the designation will not only support the growth of state-owned Ibom Air but also contribute to job creation, foreign investment inflows, and increased economic activity across the South-South region.
