Adebayo Adedamola has officially emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate for the 2026 Osun election after securing a landslide victory in Tuesday’s primary held in Osogbo.

Adedamola polled 919 out of 957 valid votes cast, leaving no contest after his only remaining opponent, Ademola Adeleke, withdrew from the race and subsequently resigned from the party.

Announcing the results, chairman of the primary committee, Humphrey Abba, declared: “Void votes 20. We told you earlier that one of the aspirants withdrew. The candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned.”

The exercise began shortly after accreditation concluded at 11:35 a.m., with the committee’s secretary, Sunday Solarin, declaring voting open. He noted that although Adeleke’s name remained on the ballot, his resignation meant any vote cast for him would “eventually amount to waste.”

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were on ground to monitor proceedings, alongside security personnel from the DSS, police and the NSCDC, who manned both entry and exit points of the venue.

Voting commenced at 11:07 a.m. following the verification of delegates’ names.

Adeleke’s resignation had been earlier reported, with his letter—dated November 4, 2025—addressed to the PDP Ward 2 Chairman, Sagba Abogunde of Ede North LGA. A copy of the letter reads in part: “Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect.

“I thank the People’s Democratic Party for the opportunities given to me for my elections as a Senator (Represented Osun West) and as Governor of Osun State under the People’s Democratic Party.”

Osun’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, also confirmed the development during a radio programme, shedding more light on the governor’s reasons for leaving the party.
