FIFA is expected to gain special approval to widen the scope of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology at next year’s World Cup. The new plan would allow VAR to review incidents previously outside its authority, including wrongly awarded corners and second yellow card decisions. FIFA officials say the change aims to improve fairness and reduce officiating errors in key matches.

If approved, the expansion would mark one of the most significant reforms to match officiating since VAR was first introduced. Trials of the new system are currently under review and could be confirmed ahead of the tournament’s kickoff.
