U.S. President Donald Trump held a meeting with Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang to discuss export controls on the chipmaker’s advanced AI processors, as his administration considers whether to allow new sales of Nvidia’s H200 chips to China, a person briefed on the conversation told Reuters.

The sit-down at the U.S. capital highlighted Nvidia’s central role in the global artificial intelligence race, with Huang pressing his case that American firms should keep access to cutting‑edge semiconductors while still being able to compete in major overseas markets, including China. Trump later praised Huang as a “smart man” and said the Nvidia boss understood where the administration stands on export restrictions, though neither side disclosed specific policy commitments from the meeting.

Huang’s White House visit coincided with a broader lobbying push on Capitol Hill, where he warned lawmakers that a patchwork of state‑level AI rules and overly rigid export limits could slow innovation and weaken U.S. competitiveness.

The administration is actively debating how far to ease curbs that were tightened under prior rules, with national security officials wary of boosting China’s access to advanced AI hardware even as industry leaders argue that U.S. dominance depends on remaining deeply engaged in global chip markets.
