Sir Mascot Uzor-Kalu has called on Nigerians to use the spirit of Boxing Day to renew their commitment to compassion, community service, and social solidarity, urging citizens and institutions to support the less privileged.
In a Boxing Day message released on Friday, the former Abia Chief of Staff described the season as a reminder of shared humanity and the enduring values of kindness and generosity. He noted that beyond festivities, Boxing Day is a moment to reflect on the struggles of vulnerable populations and the role everyone plays in building an inclusive society.
“Boxing Day is not merely a public holiday; it is a moral call to action. It reminds us that true celebration is found in lifting others, in standing with the poor, the forgotten, and those whose voices are rarely heard,” Kalu said.
He stressed that community welfare must be a collective priority, adding that sustainable development cannot happen where inequality and neglect persist.
“Our communities grow stronger when we look beyond ourselves,” he stated. “Supporting the less privileged is not an act of charity alone; it is a responsibility we owe one another as members of the same society.”
Kalu also urged well-meaning Nigerians, corporate bodies, faith-based organizations, and community leaders to intensify outreach efforts, especially during the festive season, when many vulnerable families face economic hardship.
“The joy of the season should not be reserved for a few,” he added. “We must ensure that widows, orphans, persons with disabilities, and struggling households feel a sense of belonging and hope. Even the smallest act of kindness can restore dignity and inspire resilience.”
Reaffirming his personal commitment, he pledged to continue supporting initiatives that promote social inclusion, human development, and grassroots empowerment.
“As we reflect on the meaning of Boxing Day, let us choose unity over division and compassion over complacency. Together, we can build communities where no one is left behind and where our shared humanity is reflected in our actions,” Kalu noted.
He wished Nigerians a peaceful and fulfilling Boxing Day, expressing hope that the values of love, generosity, and service will endure beyond the festive season and guide the nation in the year ahead.
