An unexpected and dramatic moment played out in Makurdi on Sunday as Mrs Regina Akume, a member of the House of Representatives and wife of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, publicly urged her husband to “come back to Christianity.”
The startling appeal was made during the wedding reception of the SGF’s son, an event that also doubled as Senator Akume’s 72nd birthday celebration.
A video of the moment, shared by Idoma Television, surfaced online on Monday and has since gone viral.
In the emotional address, Mrs Akume prayed for her husband’s long life, good health and sound judgment, but quickly turned to a stern spiritual warning, insisting that his success and political rise were rooted in his Christian faith.
She said, “I pray that the Lord will increase his years, good health of mind and body, and give him clarity in thinking and doing things right.
“And he should remember that he is a Christian, and it is Christianity that brought him this far. To drop Christianity now and go for anything else, he will not be successful.
“So my advice to him is to come back to Christianity and follow the line of Christ. We came all the way to the office of SGF, not through enemies but through Jesus Christ. And Jesus Christ is still alive and still working for us. I wish that he would come back to Christianity.”
Senator Akume, a former Benue State governor and one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures, has yet to react publicly to his wife’s remarks.
