The student community of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) University, Lapai, Niger State, has been thrown into mourning after a 300-level Computer Science student, Kelvin Danlami, died following the loss of ₦600,000 to betting.
Campus sources said the money, reportedly meant for house rent, was staked on gambling and lost, leaving the student distraught.
The tragic incident became a public knowledge when a neighbour discovered Danlami in his room and raised an alarm.
Confirming the incident, a fellow student said, “It is true that one of our fellow students committed suicide after mismanaging the money entrusted to him for house rent due to gambling”.
The Niger State Police Command also confirmed the development. According to the police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the student was rushed to the General Hospital in Lapai, where he was confirmed dead.
Abiodun said, “On 19/1/26 at about 10.30am, information received indicated that in the early hours of the day, one Kelvin danlami, a student of IBBL, was found to have hanged himself in his room with a cloth tied to the ceiling fan.
“One of the student neighbors who discovered the situation raised an alarm, and the victim was rushed to Gen hospital Lapai, where he was confirmed dead.
“The police operatives attached to Lapai Div visited the scene, conducted preliminary investigation and the family of the deceased was contacted.
However, further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the reason for such action.”
