The Federal Ministry of Education has refuted claims that it approved a controversial History textbook allegedly excluding Igbo content, declaring that the book was never authorised for use in Nigerian schools.

The Ministry said the textbook, titled “Living History,” was never submitted to the National Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), the statutory body responsible for reviewing and approving instructional materials under the national curriculum.

Officials stressed that because the book did not pass through NERDC, it was neither reviewed nor recommended and does not appear on the official list of approved History textbooks used in schools nationwide.

Following consultations with NERDC leadership and a review of endorsed materials, the Ministry confirmed that “Living History” is not recognised as an approved instructional resource in any Nigerian school.

It urged parents, teachers, school owners, and administrators to ignore speculation, misinformation, and “emotionally charged narratives,” warning that the use of unapproved textbooks could undermine curriculum standards and harm teaching and learning outcomes.

“All approved textbooks strictly comply with the national curriculum and reflect Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity, shared history, and core national values, while promoting inclusivity, balance, and unity,” the Ministry stated.

The Ministry also called on Nigerians to support responsible discourse, reject divisive misinformation, and verify the status of textbooks through official channels before adopting them.

“The public is encouraged to consult NERDC for verified information on approved textbooks. Education thrives on truth. Unity thrives on understanding,” the statement added.
